Why the Americas?

'The Americas...the new world...land of discovery, lost peoples and hidden treasures.'

Explorers sought it, empires fought for it, yet today the Americas remain as diverse and exciting as ever. From the enormous wealth and global dominance of North America's superpower, to the remote hill tribes of the Andes.

Every destination holds a completely different set of rules, routines, environments and dangers to consider. Discovering these is one of the great joys of cycle touring.

New Zealand, for example, offers superb scenery, easy camping and few people, as well as mixed weather, terrain and cycling conditions. In contrast, South East Asia offers mainly flat, easy cycling, consistent weather conditions (hot!), and a high population of interesting and culturally diverse people offering cheap accommodation and food.

In the Americas, I hope to experience the full spectrum of conditions. In North America I expect to find the ultimate challenge in terms of purely physical cycling, with vast distances, few people, and a challenging terrain and climate with spectacular scenery. In South America on the other hand, I hope to experience a whole new world of exciting and varied cultures, not to mention the challenge of a new language and the Andes!
